November 2016 - France

November 30, 2016

We've had beautiful blue skies but crispy cold mornings. Highs in the 40's but was 27F this morning. It takes a while to warm the boat up as we let it cool down overnight. We fly home first to Chicago a week from tomorrow. I've been working on adding picture to the new website and have it mostly done . Working on 2009 summer/fall pics and then should only need to review and edit.

It was a beautiful but crispy day in Paris today. We walked after mass and saw the Rembrandt exhibit at Musee Jacquemart Andre. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch in the museum cafe. What a beautiful dining room but we chose the enclosed terrace on this nice day. We finished our day with an excellent performance of Mozart's Requiem done by Eglise de la Trinite Choir, soloists and Lamoureux Orchestra. Two hours of beautiful music. Now I feel like watching Amadeus again.

France | Paris | Port de l'Arsenal-Bastille |S/Y Artemis| Happy Thanksgiving

November 24, 2016

Happy Thanksgiving! We wish you good health and happiness abound. The Apple Crisp was made early this morning with Al's help cutting apples. I pre-made the stuffing and squash so all I had to do is warm them up. The potatoes and turkey went into the pressure cooker. Turkey for 25 min then I added the potatoes for another 7 minutes. Perfect and yummy gravy all set to go. I think that was enough food for just the two of us. We had a nice bottle of wine with dinner and enjoyed talking on Skype with the families. Earlier today We went to a violin, alto and cello recital. It was not the same as the wonderful American Thanksgiving service at St. Paul's in London but it did put us into the mood. Cheers, Sante, Slainte, Prost, Cin Cin , skoal...and all those other toasts!

November 23, 2016

We visited the Musee de l'Air et de l'Espace today. It was a bit of traveling as we had to take a train and then a bus to get there. We went in the afternoon and we saw very few tourists and just a few school groups around 330. We were able to board a 747, the Concord and an American Parachute plane. The museum houses over 150 planes and tells a history of aviation and space travel. It was mostly in French but enough English sign boards to hold our interest. Le Bourget is the airport Charles Lindbergh landed in after his famous Transatlantic flight. We think we saw some of the machines from the movie The Daring Young Men and their Flying Machines.

Batailles (Battles) Victory of Wellington-Beethoven, Battle of Jemmapes-Devienne, Battle of Huns-Liszt and Overture 1812-Tchaikovski. We enjoyed a nice walk back from Parc Villette along the Canal du St. Martin. . We stopped for a late lunch along St. Martins Canal. We visited a new memorial for victims of 2015 terrorist attacks. It was in a park across from Bataclan Theatre and near Le Petit Cambodge Restaurant and Le Carillon Bar where some of the attacks occurred November 13, 2015.

France | Paris 16e | Jardin du Ranelagh

November 15, 2016

We had a picnic in Jardin du Ranelagh in 16e Paris today. We then visited Musee Marmottan Monet. This is an excellent Impressionist museum with over 100 Monet's housed in a gorgeous old mansion. It also has many Berthe Morisot, Munch, some Renoir, Sisily, Degas and Gaugen. Many of the paintings were from Monet's personal collection donated to the museum by his son Michael. Great exhibit and wonderful audioguide. Special Pissaro exhibit coming in February so we'll be excited to go back.

Nice walk after mass today. We had a lovely lunch at Cafe Constant. We walked past the Eiffel Tower and then visited the Musee National de la Marine. We finished the day with a Chamber Orchestra Concert at St. Francois de Sales in 17e. . Small world again. We heard English speaking people leaving the concert and we needed metro directions. We then discovered they were from St. Paul Minnesota.

We went to a lovely Chamber Music concert at the beautiful Palais Garnier Opera House last night. We had wanted to tour the Palais Garnier but decided it would be more fun to hear a concert there. I'm glad we did. We enjoyed some Strauss and Beethoven in this gorgeous auditorium performed by 12 musicians. Most of Paris Opera is now done at Opera Bastille where we saw Tosca last month. Palais Garnier does some opera, ballet, and classical music concerts. We arrived early to take pictures before the crowds arrived. Fun to be out in Paris after dark. Everything looks a little more exciting.

Yesterday we heard the Hanson Quartet - two violins, alto and violincello at St. Vincent de Paul. They played some Mozart and Zemlinsky. We decided it was a nice afternoon for a walk. We arrived early so stopped for a glass of wine at a nearby cafe we'd been to before.

Today after mass we strolled down the Champs Elysees which was closed for traffic as it is on the first Sunday of every month. We then took a train from Champs Elysees Clemenceau to the Basilica St. Denis. The cathedral is free on the First Sunday of each Month. We wandered the Sunday Market and ate lunch in a cafe on the square. St. Denis is an absolutely gorgeous cathedral, lovely stained glass and fabulous funeral monuments for most of the French Kings and Queens. We had a great audioguide.
